Nilaveli is one of the finest beaches in Sri Lanka, located in the north-western part of the island, approximately 16 kilometers north of Trincomalee. The name Nilaveli has two interpretations: in Tamil, it translates to ‘moon-shine open land,’ while in Sinhala, it means ‘blue sand.’ This beach is renowned for its soft white sand and breathtaking bays. Nilaveli is also famous for recreational water sports, with scuba diving, surfing, windsurfing, and snorkeling being the main activities. About two miles from the coast lies the well-known Pigeon Island, and further to the north is Red Rock Beach, an area with reddish rocks. Nilaveli boasts a wide variety of plants, reef fish, and corals, contributing to its high biodiversity.
The Sri Lakshmi Narayana Perumal Kovil and the Buddhist temple Velgam Vehera, referred to by Hindus as Natanar Kovil, are two religious sites of importance.
